This is one of my favorite pictures from our recent family reunion:
Followed by this close second:
Nothing says family reunion and summer fun like attempting family pictures and adult boys trying to dump each other off a tube as quickly as possible. My kids are laughing uncontrollably in that 1st picture because my brother was pretending to smack mosquitoes off my head while I was taking the picture and my kids thought it was hilarious. Easily amused (the kids and my brother).
That same brother is the guy about to smash into the lake (the arm protruding from the water belongs to my poor brother-in-law). Don’t worry, all ended well. My brother is an ER doctor and was able to attend to their minor injuries and still beg to get back on for one more run.
I’d share the other 542 photos I snapped at the family reunion but let’s be serious, no one really wants to see all those except for directly related family members and even then, Brian fell asleep halfway through. Come to find out, I really can take as many pictures of real, live people as I do of chocolate chip cookies.

Hey there Mel! What kind of camera/lenses do you use? I have a canon 30D… My camera is starting to not take pictures I can’t have that! It’s time for an upgrade.
Hey Ashlee – I used the Nikon D90 for several years before upgrading to the D7100 last year (both are fantastic but quite honestly, I’d buy the D90 again in a heartbeat and recommend it to everyone). I have several lenses – I use the 50mm 1.8 for nearly all of my food pictures.
Aww….they’re getting so big. Love all the smiles. 🙂
Your kiddos are getting so big!
Mel, I always love to see your kids. It couldn’t stop amused me of how well you can cope up with 5 kids (everyday) & raised them up really well like this! (Raising while coping up with older kids is not a small deal!) We’re 3, got 2 lil’ brother below me & it also had amused me of how my Parents raised us all. Except, it was easier for my Mom because we have 5 years interval between us.
Not that I hate kids, I love them! I even been a Preschool Teacher! But 5 kids, really, it amused me, until now! You’re a great role-mother! 😀
We just did family pictures in Vegas in 109 degrees. 🙂 sweaty good time
Great picture of your adorable kids. The other one is hilarious. Glad you had a great time!
Your kids are adorable! Great action shot of the guys getting flipped!
Mel- your children are absolutely adorable! The photo of the “boys” on the tube is great, too! Thanks for sharing!
I think of you often. You are such a special person with an amazing family. Your children are just as cute as when you left Nibley. I have a question for you and this is the only way I knew how to get a hold of you since we come to your blog often for yummy meals. Could you please send me your email? I hope you can help me.
I’m sure you noticed… but look at your sweet daughter’s hands making a ‘heart’ shape, and she’s right there in the middle of her brothers too. Just adds to the adorableness of this picture. Beautiful children!
Love your site, make recipes from it all the time! I too, had 4 boys and 1 girl (before adding 2 more girls). And we live in MN too (twin cities area:) My hubby and I met at BYU (I think you guys did too, right?) and are big fans. Love family reunions too… we had one at Christmas and those memories are some of my most cherished memories.
Great site, Mel… I’ve referred so many people to your site. Most of the new recipes that I try are from you.
I love snapshot Saturday! Looks like you had a fun reunion. I’m in the middle of planning/executing one with my siblings in a couple weeks. Your kids are adorable (of course)! The tubing picture is awesome too!
What a blast! Your kids are adorable Mel! Glad you had fun at the reunion!!!
Looks like you had fun! Glad everyone was OK.
What an adorable family photo. I wish I could go to a family reunion, but our family is so small and we are all local!!! I love the shot of your brother–hilarious. I bet it is convenient to have an ER doctor in the family, but hopefully you will never have to use his expertise. I really love the Snapshot Saturdays since it only adds to the fun and greatness of your site! Thanks for another fun glimpse.
Take all the pictures you want because before you know it has even happened they will be grown and gone. Back in the day, when my kids were small, we had film, and it had to be developed, and it all cost a lot, so not many photos were taken. I have about 3 of myself as a little girl. I took many more of my kids, but not as many as are taken of my grandkids thanks to digital cameras. I love the photos of my family, and can only wish I’d had a digital camera back then. You’re SO lucky to have one, AND the sweetest family to take pictures of! My greatest pleasure has been taking snapshots of grandchildren and turning them into portraits with PhotoShop. It’s how I get to “play with them” when they are far away. Well, that, and Power Point presentations where I made up stories starring them, as a way to amuse them and myself!
Love these shots – how fun!!
They looks like such angels in that first photo, as of course, I’m sure they they are 🙂
Oh my gosh Mel. I love taking pictures of my kids as much as you love taking pictures of food!! I LOVE your pictures! I was actually wanting to see more
You have a beautiful family. I love your recipes. Thank you for sharing.
Such cute kiddos!! Love the neatness of their clothes. Love to see the family pics.
Thanks for sharing!!
Oh your children are so darling!! Thank you for sharing their pictures with us!! The guys in the water, that is just too fun:) Sounds like you had a great family reunion! Snapshot Saturday…keep them coming!!
Mel, your kids are beautiful. Cam looks so adorable! I’m glad you had fun at your family reunion. You deserve it.
Your kids are so cute! Always remind yourself that this is such a short time in their lives and so much fun. They grow up soooo fast and then you will really appreciate all of the pictures you take of them.
Beautiful family! Love Snapshot Saturdays.
Love Snaphot Saturdays and the family pictures that instantly brings on a smile. Such fun loving, handsome boys. So glad after the rough start, your vacation turned into much joy and laughter. Cam is growing up — she looks a little hesitant and shy in this picture. She can not get any more adorable! Thank you for sharing pieces of your life with us. Bring on the pictures because along with the delicious recipes and humorous and heartfelt writing, they add to the fun of your site and bring smiles to our hearts.
Wow! This does look like fun! You’ve got some CUTE kids. Mel, how did you catch that picture of the boys falling off of the tube? That is amazing!
From your whole food-y!
My Over-All Apron – recent post: HEALTHFUL MINT CHOCOLATE SHAKE http://myover-allapron.blogspot.com/2014/07/healthful-mint-chocolate-chip-shake.html
Janie Lynn – I took about a billion pictures with my zoom lens while they were on the tube and quite honestly, I’m lucky I didn’t get thrown while I was trying to stand up at the back of the boat and snap pictures while Brian drove like a madman. We sure got some hilarious shots, though.
So much fun! How do you convince your boys to dress so cute? I can get my boys in polos and button down shirts until they are about 3, then they develop their own opinions and it is t-shirts all the way.
Good question. My boys don’t think they’re having fun unless they’re looking kind of sloppy. Until they get into high school, then they like to wear nicer stuff. Mel’s boys look great. Does she bribe them? With chocolate chip cookies?
Barbara (and Jackie) – we take family pictures so infrequently that I tell my boys “you may not like this, it may not be the funnest moment of your life, but it means a lot to me to have great pictures so decide right now to have a good attitude and cooperate.” I repeat that about 50 times each day starting two weeks before pictures – when their grandma asked them at the reunion how they felt about pictures my oldest said “well, we may not like it but it means a lot to my mom so I guess we’ll do it.” I switched at least two heads in Photoshop to get eyes on the camera but otherwise, they do pretty good. Keep in mind that we live out in the country so on any given day, my kids are wearing really old, tattered play clothes meant for digging in dirt and getting even rattier. They actually kind of think it’s cool to “dress up” like this and were ecstatic to get a new pair of shorts out of the deal. 🙂
So sweet, Mel! I would like to see at least 300 of the remaining 542, but that’s just me. 🙂
Your children are adorable! I have never-ever-even-once been able to get all my four boys to all look at the camera for a photo. Turns out I will have to enlist my brother to make them all giggle my direction. Glad you got to spend a fun time your family. Hooray for summer vacations.
